Norma Kamali for Wal-Mart

Wal-Mart is dipping into high-end fashion again with a long-term licensing partnership with designer Norma Kamali. But how will this veteran designer, best known for her innovative staples like the sleeping bag coat and her use of silk parachutes as fabric, mix with the world's largest retailer, whose hottest apparel pieces are less-than-$10 basics?

The answer is selectively. After being burned with its approach to Metro7, the company's last major fashion venture, Wal-Mart (nyse: WMT - news - people ) is reapproaching fashion slowly. Kamali's line will sell in only 350 out of 3,800 stores this fall. Wal-Mart wouldn't identify which stores when it announced the deal last week, but said initial offerings will include misses' casual and career women's apparel. Later, women's accessories, children's clothing and home products will be added.

"We are being very deliberate about where we put this," said Linda Blakely, a Wal-Mart spokeswoman.

They should be. Wal-Mart attempted to make a big fashion splash in fall 2005, by advertising in Vogue and even throwing its own Fashion Week show in New York's Times Square. The company quickly followed this fanfare by launching Metro7, which landed in 500 urban doors with higher than average Wal-Mart prices.

At first, the fashion-forward line did well--executives claimed they could barely keep up with demand. But a year later, when the line had expanded to 1,000-plus stores, the product wasn't selling. Wal-Mart significantly discounted the duds for Christmas, and now the collection has been scaled back to 500 stores again.

"I think they really went to school on this, and expanding their New York-based operations seems to be helping," said Howard Davidowitz, chairman of Davidowitz & Associates, a national retail and investment banking firm.

Wal-Mart has never been very good at selling clothes. But last month, during a fourth-quarter earnings conference call, Wal-Mart President and CEO Eduardo Castro-Wright said that apparel sales were "improving" and that early spring sales were "a very promising leading indicator."

However, best sellers were still private-label items for under $10. Reporting February sales figures on Thursday, the company highlighted apparel as an area where it is seeing improvement over the past.

So how will Kamali's line fit in with Wal-Mart's menagerie of mostly staple apparel items? Despite her renown as a high-end designer, Kamali said her clothes will have "Wal-Mart prices" and complement the discounter's aesthetic. Prior to this deal, Kamali also designed lower-priced collections for active-wear company Everlast and Spiegel catalogs. She also plans to sell her Wal-Mart designs alongside upscale pieces at her midtown Manhattan store.

"It's definitely not fast fashion," said Kamali, referring to the kind of street fashions sold at retailers like Zara and H&M. “It's more timeless things everyone can wear."

Wal-Mart's more modest approach to Kamali could provide the company a better strategy to approach fashion in the future, according to analysts.

"If this is executed correctly, it has a chance to do well," said Britt Beamer, chairman of America's Research Group in Charleston, S.C., which studies consumer behavior. "With apparel margins being some of the highest for discount retailers, they would be foolish if they didn't try this."

The key to Wal-Mart's future success is recognizing stores where more affluent customers shop and adding fashion in only those places, Davidowitz said.

"We know that they can't sell fashion everywhere," Davidowitz said. "The average Wal-Mart customer is still that person who walks in the store with only 11 bucks in his pocket."

The 4 Most Flattering Clothing Colors

There are four colors that look fabulous on every woman no matter her skin tone or hair color. They are eggplant, true red, Indian teal and mellow rose.

That's the word from Leatrice Eiseman, author of "The Color Answer Book" and director of the Pantone Color Institute, who tells Real Simple magazine that these four colors fall into the middle of the color spectrum, meaning they are not too cool or too warm.

Eggplant
While there are dozens of shades of purple, this one is "the perfect purple," according to Eiseman. Like black, dark brown or navy, it's very versatile but more interesting than these colors and should be a wardrobe staple.

True Red
Dare to be a lady in red! Wearing this bold color makes everyone in the room look at you. New York City makeup artist Sonia Kashuk told Real Simple that it flatters everyone because it "resides in the center of the color spectrum, in between a cool, cherry red and a warm, orangey tomato red."

Indian Teal
This shade of teal is the exact opposite of pink. Remember, opposite colors look beautiful together. (Think red and green.) So when women wear teal, it enhances the healthy flush of the skin. Teal can be worn year round, making it more versatile than lighter, more summery shades of turquoise. It also pairs beautifully with black and brown.

Mellow Rose
More sophisticated than bubble-gum pink, mellow rose is that wonderful shade between light pink and peach. Kashuk says it's more of a neutral color than it is a pastel and highlights skin tone's natural flush so it almost appears to make you glow when you wear it. (P.S. It's a great lipstick color, too!)
